Sales Engineer - Controls and Drives Specialist

We’re looking for a Sales Engineer – Controls and Drives Specialist who will be responsible for driving revenue growth by identifying and securing new business opportunities, maintaining strong relationships with existing clients and combining technical expertise with sales skills to sell motor controls and drives, motors, and related equipment, and engineered solutions. Reporting to the Sales Manager, the Sales Engineer – Controls and Drives Specialist will conduct technical presentations; develop and present proposals; assess customer needs; provide after-sales support; and collaborate with internal teams to ensure project success. This position works daily within a 100-mile radius of Baltimore, including the Delmarva Peninsula.

Key Priorities and Responsibilities

Customer and Market Engagement:

  • Identifies new clients and maintain relationships with existing ones, representing the company at trade shows and events.
  • Travels to customer sites (factories, construction sites, municipalities, etc.) to understand their needs and recommend appropriate motor controls, and related items.
  • Maintains strong relationships with existing customers to ensure repeat business and customer satisfaction.
  • Develops, executes, and sustains a sales strategy that supports Hill’s efforts to market and sell company products and services to customers.

Technical Sales Support:

  • Acts as the technical expert by explaining complex products and systems, conducting product demonstrations, and answering technical inquiries.
  • Works with internal engineering, service, production, and customer service teams to ensure customer needs are met throughout the sales and delivery process.
  • Strong background in controls, variable frequency drives, and soft starters.
  • Make in-person presentations for maintenance staff and industry groups.
  • Provides controls sales support for a team of six (6) outside salespeople.
  • Reads and interprets technical drawings.

Solution Development:

  • Analyzes customer requirements and system conditions to propose the most suitable products or system designs, which may include energy efficiency upgrades or performance improvements.

Proposal and Quoting:

  • Assembles and presents technical submittals, proposals, and pricing structures, ensuring they meet customer needs and company profitability.

Project and Sales Management:

  • Manages the sales process from lead generation to project handoff and support, tracking sales activities, maintaining records, and preparing reports.
  • Coordinates with service teams for installation, maintenance, or troubleshooting.
  • Manages target sales number for various manufacturers.

Safety, Health and Training Requirements:

  • Adheres to safety protocols, including the safe handling of tools, chemicals, and equipment and requirements of Hill’s customers and vendors.
  • Wears required safety/health clothing, shoes, and protective gear required by Hill’s and its customers and vendors.
  • Attends required safety trainings and briefings.
  • Attends required job and skills trainings.
  • Adheres to all traffic laws and safety regulations while driving and handling equipment, including driving hands-free.

Team Leadership:

  • Ensures that the team understands job requirements and upholds company values.
  • Helps co-workers in other departments to get the job done.
  • Assists technicians in developing their job skills and career growth.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills to develop strong relationships with employees, vendors, and customers.

Is This You?:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience.
  • 5-6+ years’ experience in electrical or mechanical engineering, with strong emphasis in controls, variable frequency drives, and soft starters.
  • 3+ years’ experience providing technical sales to industrial and municipal clients.
  • Strong knowledge of fluid dynamics, hydraulic performance, and operating theory for pumps and related equipment (e.g., mechanical seals).
  • Familiarity with engineering standards and guidelines.
  • Experience with system design and performance analysis.
  • Experience reading project specifications and bid requests.
  • Ability to conduct sales presentations and demonstrations effectively.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with attention to detail.
  • Must be a competitive person with a desire to win business through sales strategy, technical proficiency, and customer service.
  • Ability to stay ahead and on-track with work assignments.
  • Ability to work on your own, think things through, and make decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Software proficiency including but not limited to:
    • Advanced proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
    • Advanced proficiency including advanced accounting and operations formulas.
    • Intermediate proficiency with CRM Systems.
    • Intermediate proficiency with Adobe InDesign, Pro, or Acrobat.
    • Advanced proficiency reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
    • Advanced proficiency with video conferencing to schedule and conduct meetings and events via video conferencing technology.

Work Environment:

  • This position works at customer/vendor sites with loud noises, smells, chemicals, and variable weather conditions.
  • Customer/Vendor Interactions: This position requires significant interactions with vendors and customers.
  • Reading Skills: Advanced reading skills to include interpreting complex business and technical documents, engineering drawings, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Writing Skills: Advanced writing skills needed to review, edit, and finalize reports and analyses.
  • Math Skills: Requires advanced math skills to include advanced mathematical calculations and statistical analysis.
  • Driving Requirements: This position requires driving to/from customer and vendor sites as a routine part of the job.
  • Travel Requirements: Travel is necessary, up to 100% of the time, with daily regional travel and occasional out-of-town business trips.

Terrific Total Compensation Package:

  • Annual base starting salary of $115,000-$125,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Performance-based bonuses.
