The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is seeking an experienced scientific and educational leader committed to the next generation of physicists in our country to serve as the Director of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) and Sigma Pi Sigma. The SPS Director will provide leadership and oversight of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) and Sigma Pi Sigma (the Physics Honor Society). The SPS Director will lead staff, direct the daily operation of both societies, and provide service and outreach activities for Chapters, Physics Departments, Member Societies, and the public around the country.
This strategic position will work with directors, key volunteers, and Member Societies to develop new education activities and advancing AIP presence in the science/physics arena. This position will also have a key role in developing and leading fundraising activities for student programs.
Located in College Park, Maryland, AIP serves as a federation of physical science societies in a common mission to promote physics and allied fields.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Planning
- Develop and track metrics to ensure positive student chapter engagement throughout the country.
- Develop new programs and revenue streams to enhance and support AIP outreach to SPS student chapters
- Develop branding strategies to define the image of AIP for student and faculty engagement initiatives
Program Management
- Lead initiatives for programmatic and website enhancements for SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma programs
- Measure effectiveness of SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma Programs
- Tracks costs and budgets for SPS/Sigma Pi Sigma Programs
Chapter & Conference Leadership
- Lead initiatives to improve AIP branding for student chapters on university campuses
- Lead and develop student physic society conferences
Staff Development
- Direct the planning, development, implementation, budgeting, and support of all SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma department functions.
- Provide guidance, coaching and direction for SPS staff to improve student chapter participation and engagement.
- Administer and manage policies, standards, and practices to ensure fair, consistent and effective operations.
Governance
- Serve as chief liaison to the SPS/Sigma Pi Sigma governance boards
- Participate in other program groups as needed
Fundraising/Development
- Engage with corporate and educational donors to build a fundraising platform to support STEM program and scholarship initiatives to improve the funnel of physics students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Member Society Liaison Services
- Lead the delivery of a high level of customer service to all participating Member Societies in the areas of Student and Faculty engagement.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in physics, physical sciences, natural sciences, or related scientific discipline required. Ph.D. degree in a physics, physical science, natural sciences, or related scientific field preferred.
- 8-10 years of experience in developing and leading undergraduate student-focused STEM programs, in a higher education or non-profit management environment and managing a staff.
- 5-7 years experience in collaborating and strategizing with university administrators and senior level nonprofit leaders.
- 5-7 years experience forging corporate-education partnerships to improve STEM and Physics education.
- Extensive experience with hosting and leading conference, develiopng new chapters, and membership management strongly encouraged.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook).
- Must possess outstanding networks, connections and linkages with science/physics programs at colleges and universities across the country.
- Demonstrated commitment to student success in STEM and physics disciplines strongly preferred.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize.
