Position Summary
The Grassroots Advocacy Associate is responsible for working with APS members and other organizations to advance the Society’s federal policy priorities and interests. The Associate will develop and implement APS grassroots campaigns in consultation with APS Office of Government Affairs leadership and represent APS at selected meetings, advocacy coalitions, and education & research facilities.

A Typical Week May Look Like This…
  • Manage all APS grassroots advocacy campaigns, Congressional Visits, and Contact Congress events. 
  • Join in-state meetings with grassroots advocates as advised by Office of Government Affairs leadership. 
  • Develop and promote activities that recruit APS grassroots volunteers and sustain the grassroots network. 
  • Monitor best practices in grassroots advocacy and make corresponding refinements in consultation with Office of Government Affairs leadership. 
  • Provide training to Congressional Visit Day participants and, as necessary, to grassroots advocacy volunteers. 
  • Deliver lectures on science policy issues at universities, national laboratories, APS unit meetings, and other appropriate venues.
  • Represent APS and Office of Government Affairs at selected advocacy coalition meetings, scientific meetings, APS national & divisional meetings, and other appropriate venues. 
  • Participate in the development of advocacy campaigns and strategies that reinforce the legislative strategies established by APS Office of Government Affairs.
  • Provide topical information on issues of importance to the society. 
  • Responsibility of select policy issues available based on interests and experience. 
  • Communicates regularly with Chief Government Affairs Officer, APS science policy staff, Office of Government Affairs Administrator and Press Secretary as well as APS membership, Congressional staff, and colleagues at other scientific organizations.
  • Position requires some business travel to attend meetings and events as directed by supervisor.
Is This You?
Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • 1-3 years related experience (Grassroots Advocacy Associate); 3+ years related experience (Grassroots Advocacy Senior Associate).
  • Experience with legislative process, Congress, and executive branch highly desirable.  
  • Good understanding of the culture of scientific societies and their membership helpful. 
  • Strong organization, documentation, and prioritization skills. 
  • Strong written and oral communication, presentation and interpersonal skills. 
  • Excellent attention to detail. 
  • High degree of professionalism. 
  • Must take initiative and be a self-starter. 
  • Ability to adapt to quickly changing schedules. 
  • Ability to work well with interdepartmental teams as well as independently.
