ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION PROGRAMS
The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is seeking an experienced nonprofit manager committed to the next generation of physicists. AIP is looking for an Assistant Director to provide day to day operational management of the Society of Physics Students (SPS), Sigma Pi Sigma (the Physics Honor Society), and other education programs. Responsibilities will include working with the Director to assess and evaluate programs and staff, conduct long-range planning, promote student programs, and provide membership management for these programs.
This hands-on management position will work with colleagues, staff, and key volunteers to develop new education and membership activities to advance AIP’s presence in the physical sciences/physics arena for undergraduates.
Our ideal candidate will have experience as a program director or deputy executive director of scientific or higher education related association. This person will enjoy collaborating with and working with a diverse and energetic staff committed to improving physics education at the undergraduate level.
Located in College Park, Maryland, AIP serves as a federation of societies committed to the advances, promotion and serving the physical sciences for the benefit of humanity.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Management
· Assist with initiatives for programmatic and website enhancements for SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma programs.
· Develop metrics for effectiveness of programs.
· Help develop, monitor, and manage annual budget.
· Contribute to policy development and long-range planning for the division.
· Participate in grant proposal writing for new initiatives as appropriate.
Undergraduate Physics Outreach
· Work with SPS Director to further develop and implement projects that address the undergraduate physics’ experience.
· Work with SPS Director to develop and implement projects to advance career pathways of undergraduates.
Membership Management
· Oversee member engagement and data management for the division.
· Manage all efforts related to serving the membership of SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma.
· Develop strategies for engaging alumni members of Sigma Pi Sigma.
· Assist the Director with support of the SPS Council and Executive Committee, SPS Chapters, Physics Departments, Member Societies, and the public.
Chapter & Conference Leadership
· Represent AIP education programs at meetings of professional societies and other related conferences and meetings.
· Work with the communications team to effectively communicate with members, volunteer leaders, and other stakeholders.
Staff Development
· Supervise staff and daily operations to ensure effective and efficient functioning of education related programs.
· Provide guidance, coaching, and direction for program staff to improve student chapter participation and engagement.
· Administer and manage policies, standards, and practices to ensure fair, consistent, and effective operations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or equivalent in work and educational experience.
- 5+ years of association/nonprofit management experience or higher education management experience, with emphasis in membership management, with a demonstrated interest in science education (CAE preferred).
- 3-4 years of experience in developing and leading undergraduate student career related programs (STEM focus ideal), in a higher education or non-profit management environment preferred.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook).
- 3+ years of experience managing a staff.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize.
